Day 1
Auckland to Paihia

Distance 270km - Driving Time 3 hour, 25 minutes

Your North Island adventure kicks off in Auckland, where you'll pick up your maui campervan near the airport. Our friendly team will make sure you're set up and ready to hit the road. Once you’re behind the wheel, it's time to head north toward Paihia and dive into your road trip. 

First up, make a quick stop at the charming village of Puhoi. It’s a small place, but it’s big on character—grab a coffee and maybe some of their famous Puhoi cheese before getting back on the road. As you continue your journey, stretch your legs at Whangārei Falls. The 26-metre waterfall is easy to get to and makes for a great spot to snap some photos. 

On the last stretch toward Paihia, you’ll feel the vibe change as you enter Northland’s lush, green landscapes. When you roll into Paihia, you’ll be right at the heart of the Bay of Islands, ready to start exploring this stunning region.

Day 2
Explore the Bay of Islands

No need to drive today – just soak up everything the Bay of Islands has to offer. Start your day by hopping on a boat tour to see the famous Hole in the Rock and, if you're lucky, spot some dolphins playing in the waves. The crystal-clear waters and lush islands make this one of New Zealand’s most scenic spots. 

For a bit of history, visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, one of New Zealand’s most important cultural sites. You can learn about the treaty that shaped the nation and explore the beautiful grounds, which overlook the bay. 

If you’re after something more adventurous, try kayaking around the islands or even take a scenic flight to get a bird’s-eye view of the area. And for those who just want to relax, the beaches around Russell and Paihia are perfect for a laid-back afternoon. 

As the day winds down, grab some fish and chips, find a spot by the water, and enjoy the sunset. It’s the perfect way to wrap up your time in the Bay of Islands before you head off to your next destination.

Day 3
Bay of Islands to Waipoua Forest

Distance 128km - Driving Time 2 hours, 10 mins

After soaking in the beauty of the Bay of Islands, it’s time to head west toward the ancient giants of Waipoua Forest. This drive takes you through the lush landscapes of Northland, with plenty of opportunities to stop and stretch your legs along the way. 

A must-see stop is Opononi, a charming coastal town on the edge of Hokianga Harbour, known for its sweeping views and rich history. It's a great place to take a break, enjoy the peaceful harbour, and maybe enjoy a picnic by the waterfront.  

As you get closer to Waipoua, the landscape begins to shift to dense native forest, signalling your approach to one of New Zealand’s most ancient and significant kauri forests. Here, you can see Tāne Mahuta, the largest kauri tree in New Zealand and a symbol of the natural history of the region. There are a number of easy walking tracks nearby, allowing you to immerse yourself in the majesty of the forest. 

Tonight, enjoy parking up at Te Roroa Waipoua Campground. This peaceful campground offers basic but comfortable facilities including hot showers, a communal kitchen, and plenty of space to relax among the native trees. It’s the perfect base for exploring Waipoua Forest.

Day 4
Waipoua Forest to Auckland

Distance 220km - Driving Time 3 hours

Today, you’ll make your way back to Auckland. The drive takes you through beautiful countryside before heading back toward the city. If you're keen for a break along the way, stop at Matakohe to visit the Kauri Museum, where you can learn more about the history and significance of these incredible trees. 

Once you reach Auckland, head to Takapuna Beach, a lively spot with stunning views of Rangitoto Island. Spend the afternoon exploring the beach – swim, relax in the sunshine, or enjoy a coffee at one of the nearby cafes. For those who want to stretch their legs, take a walk along the Takapuna to Milford coastal walk, where you’ll get some fantastic views of the Hauraki Gulf. 

Settle in at Takapuna Beach Holiday Park, located right on the beachfront. You’ll have easy access to the water and be within walking distance to the local restaurants and shops. It’s a great spot to relax and enjoy the final moments of your day. 

Day 5
Auckland to Coromandel Peninsula

Leave the city behind as you make your way to the stunning Coromandel Peninsula. This region is famous for its mix of rugged beauty and golden beaches, offering a fantastic escape from the hustle and bustle. On your way, consider stopping at Miranda Hot Springs for a relaxing dip in the naturally heated pools. 

Once you arrive on the Coromandel Peninsula, head to Hot Water Beach, where you can dig your own natural hot pool in the sand at low tide. It's a unique and relaxing experience and one of the highlights of this area.

Day 6
Coromandel Peninsula to Whitianga

Distance 34km - Driving Time 34 minutes

Today’s drive is short but packed with opportunities to explore more of the Coromandel Peninsula. On your way to Whitianga, you can make a quick detour to Cooks Beach or visit the famous Shakespeare Cliff Lookout for stunning coastal views. 

Once you arrive in Whitianga, take time to explore this laid-back beach town. Head to Buffalo Beach for a swim or try some water sports like paddleboarding or kayaking. If you're in the mood for something more relaxing, stroll around the marina or visit one of the local cafes and enjoy the seaside vibe. 

Relax tonight at Mercury Bay Holiday Park, which offers a quiet, relaxed atmosphere just a short walk from the beach, restaurants, and shops.  

Day 7
Whitianga to Rotorua

Distance 233km - Driving Time 3 hours, 15 minutes

Today’s journey takes you inland to the geothermal wonderland of Rotorua, known for its bubbling mud pools, hot springs, and rich Māori culture. The drive is scenic, offering a change from the coastal vibes of the Coromandel Peninsula to the steamy, sulphur-filled landscapes of Rotorua. 

Once you arrive, dive into the local geothermal wonders by visiting Te Puia, where you can witness the famous Pōhutu Geyser erupting. Rotorua is also home to the Whakarewarewa Forest, where you can enjoy mountain biking or take a canopy walk among the towering redwoods. 

For those keen on a little relaxation, a soak in the hot pools at Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park is a must. Explore Rotorua

Start your day with a visit to Kuirau Park, a free public park where you can see bubbling mud pools and steaming vents – right in the middle of the city. It’s a great way to experience Rotorua’s geothermal activity without leaving town. 

Next, explore Rotorua’s connection to adventure sports. Head over to Rotorua Canopy Tours for an exhilarating zipline experience through ancient native forests. It’s a fun, eco-friendly way to see New Zealand’s unique flora and fauna from a different perspective. 

If you’re keen to relax, spend the afternoon at the Blue Lake (Lake Tikitapu). This beautiful lake is perfect for a swim or a lakeside picnic, with plenty of peaceful walking tracks surrounding it.

Day 9
Rotorua to Taupō

Distance 76km - Driving Time 55 minutes

Today’s drive is short but full of geothermal wonders. As you head toward Taupō, consider making a stop at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, where you can explore vibrant hot springs, bubbling mud pools, and the famous Champagne Pool. Another great stop is the impressive Huka Falls, where the Waikato River thunders through a narrow canyon – an amazing sight to witness. 

Once you arrive in Taupō, spend some time by Lake Taupō, New Zealand’s largest lake, formed by a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. You can enjoy a lakeside stroll, go paddleboarding, or even take a boat cruise to see the Māori rock carvings at Mine Bay.

Day 10

Once you arrive in Napier, take some time to explore this unique city, known for its Art Deco architecture and vibrant cultural scene. Wander the streets of the city centre to admire the well-preserved buildings, or visit the National Aquarium of New Zealand to see a variety of marine life, including sharks and stingrays. 

For wine lovers, a visit to one of Hawke’s Bay’s renowned wineries is a must. The region is famous for its vineyards, and there are plenty of options for tastings and tours.

Day 11
Napier to Gisborne

Distance 214km - Driving Time 3 hours, 10 minutes

It’s day 11, and today, you’ll travel along the scenic route from Napier to Gisborne, passing through some of the most remote and beautiful parts of the North Island. Along the way, you can stop at Morere Hot Springs to relax in the natural thermal pools surrounded by native bush, offering a peaceful break before continuing on your journey. 

Once you reach Gisborne, you’re in the heart of New Zealand’s famous East Coast. Known for its beaches and wineries, Gisborne is the perfect spot for both relaxation and adventure.
