What are powered camping sites?

Powered camping sites are designated areas in holiday parks and campgrounds that provide access to electricity for campervans and motorhomes. Unlike non-powered sites, these spots let you plug in to keep your appliances running and charge your vehicle’s house battery. Most powered sites also offer water connections and, in some cases, waste disposal.

In addition to electricity, powered sites often come with shared amenities like showers, communal kitchens, barbecue areas, and laundry facilities. Some campgrounds even offer extras like TV rooms and playgrounds, adding comfort to your stay.

Why choose powered sites while travelling in a campervan?

Powered camping sites offer several benefits that can make your trip more comfortable, sustainable, and flexible. Let’s take a closer look:

Comfort & convenience

Powered sites let you use power-heavy appliances like heaters, hairdryers, microwaves, and chargers without draining your campervan’s battery. This means you can stay warm and enjoy modern conveniences as long as you like.

Sustainability

Using powered sites helps minimise your environmental impact by reducing the need to run your vehicle’s engine or a generator. Some campgrounds and holiday parks are increasingly focusing on sustainability, with some even generating energy from solar power. This reduces fuel consumption, emissions, and supports greener travel by tapping into renewable energy sources.

Safety

A reliable power supply can be crucial, especially in remote areas or during cold nights. Having electricity ensures you can safely heat your campervan, keep your lights on, and maintain communication devices when needed.

Flexible travel

Powered sites allow for extended stays and more off-the-beaten-path exploration without sacrificing access to modern amenities. You can enjoy the freedom of staying longer in scenic spots while still having power for your daily needs.

How to choose the right powered campsite for your adventure

Finding the right powered campsite can make all the difference in your campervan holiday. Here are some key factors to consider.

Location

Think about the proximity to key attractions, scenic spots, and the activities you want to enjoy. A great location can enhance your overall experience.

Amenities

Decide whether you want extra amenities like a swimming pool, communal kitchens, or laundry facilities. Having these can make your stay more comfortable, especially on longer trips.

Reviews & ratings

Before booking, check reviews on websites like Rankers or Campermate to see what other travellers have said. This can give you camper-specific feedback on the best spots to stay.

Booking in advance

Popular holiday parks and campsites can book up fast, especially during peak seasons. It's a good idea to reserve your spot early. You can also use the thl Roadtrip app to help with booking and planning your route.

Sustainability practices

Look for campsites and holiday parks that prioritise eco-friendly practices, such as waste management, water conservation, and even solar power. These small choices help reduce your environmental footprint while travelling.

What to expect when staying at a powered campsite (H2)

Staying at a powered campsite is a great way to add comfort and convenience to your campervan adventure. Here’s what you can expect when you pull in.

Arrival & check-in process

When you arrive at the holiday park, you’ll usually check in at reception. The receptionist will get you registered, give you a map, and assign your campsite. It’s a good time to ask about the facilities and any park-specific rules, so you’re all set for a smooth stay.

Connecting your campervan to power

Hooking your maui campervan up to power is simple. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Find the power box at your site, and make sure the main supply is turned off.

  1. Locate the 240v inlet on the exterior of your motorhome and the 15-amp orange power cord (stored in an exterior storage locker).

  1. Plug one end of the power cord into your campervan and the other into the power box. The power inlet for your campervan will be on the outside of the campervan.

  1. Turn on the power at the box, and you’re good to go!

If you’re unsure, the thl Roadtrip app has helpful videos to guide you through connecting to power and other useful tips. You can also watch our quick video on how to use the 240v power in your motorhome

Rules & etiquette

Holiday parks usually have a few basic rules to keep things running smoothly. There are often quiet hours in the evening, so try to keep the noise down during those times. Be respectful in shared spaces like kitchens and barbecue areas by cleaning up after yourself, and make sure to follow the waste disposal guidelines to help keep the park tidy for everyone.

Essential items to bring to a powered campsite

When staying at a powered campsite, having the right gear can make your trip much more enjoyable. Thankfully, your maui campervan comes well-equipped with everyday essentials to make life on the road easier.

What’s provided in a maui campervan

Every maui campervan comes with a range of general, kitchen, and bedding essentials. You'll find items like a dustpan, brush, bucket, and clothesline for daily needs. In the kitchen, everything from cutlery to wine glasses, saucepans, and a coffee plunger is included, making it easy to cook meals on the go. For a comfortable sleep, you’ll have pillows, sheets, a duvet, towels, and even a bathmat.

Power connection requirements

Your maui motorhome comes with a 15-amp extension lead, essential for connecting to power at campsites. While campgrounds and holiday parks in New Zealand are equipped with 15-amp connections, homes typically have 10-amp sockets. Campervans require the 15-amp connection due to the larger earth pin, so it’s important to book a powered site as household sockets won’t be compatible.

Other items to bring

For added comfort, consider bringing outdoor chairs and a table to relax outside your campervan. These can be hired as additional items when you book your maui campervan, making it easy to enjoy meals or a quiet moment outdoors during your stay.
