Top 15 things to do in Taranaki

Wondering what to do in Taranaki? Here are some of our top recommendations.

Roam through the Taranaki Gardens

If you’re a keen garden admirer, you’ll have plenty to see in Taranaki. First up, explore the stunning Pukeiti rainforest park in New Plymouth. This botanical gem is nestled at the foot of Mount Taranaki (also referred to as Mt Egmont). Pukeiti hosts one of the world’s biggest and most diverse collections of rhododendrons and other exotics. It’s also home to a fabulous range of rainforest tracks ranging from 0.7 km to 1.9 km. Admire the ancient rimu trees and take in spectacular views of the Tasman Sea and the Pouakai and Kaitake mountain ranges.

Another must-see garden is Pukekura Park. This park covers 52 hectares in the middle of the city. Wander through the fernery and display houses, see the water lily lake, and the Kunming Garden.

Check out more great Taranaki gardens. You may also like to time your visit to coincide with the Taranaki Garden Festival in late October / early November.

Hike the Pouākai Crossing

Keen to take a decent hike? Taranaki’s Pouākai Crossing is an excellent choice. This fantastic trail offers a 7.5-hour journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Mt Taranaki's lower slopes. Immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring scenery, including towering cliffs, a mesmerising waterfall, and unique wetlands.

You have two options to start the track: either from Mangorei Road or the Egmont National Park Visitor Centre. Feel free to choose the direction that suits you best, but starting from the visitor centre means less uphill climbing. For those seeking a multi-day experience, consider a stop at the Pouākai Hut along the way. Keep in mind that the weather in this region can change rapidly, so make sure you're well-prepared with warm clothing and suitable footwear. Don't forget to check the weather forecast before embarking on your adventure.

Enjoy a picnic at Back Beach

Voted one of New Zealand's favourite beaches, Back Beach is the perfect spot for a picnic. Overlooking Sugar Loaf Marine Park and Paritutu, this beach is a popular spot for experienced surfers. But it’s also a lovely spot to relax and take in the stunning scenery. Take a walk along the beach at low tide and explore the Sugar Loaf Islands. There are several access points to the beach along Centennial Drive. If you’re in town on a Sunday, grab some picnic supplies first at the Taranaki Farmers Market – held at Huakoki Plaza from 9 am – noon.

Have some fish and chips in Opunake

Park up the camper beside the beach, pour a glass of wine, and dive into some fresh fish and chips! It doesn’t get any better. And a great place to enjoy this iconic Kiwi dinner is at Opunake. Order your favourite feast from Opunake Fish, Chips & More then find a spot to watch the sunset at Opunake Beach. If you’re here earlier in the day, take a walk along the cliff-top walkway where you’ll find some beautiful gardens.

Explore the Surf Highway

Hoping to get some surfing in during your Taranaki road trip? You’re in luck. The coastal road from New Plymouth to Hawera, known as Surf Highway 45, leads to a number of legendary surf beaches. Fitzroy Beach is a popular surf spot with a beach break that can create some excellent barrels and hollow waves. At the opposite end is East End Beach, another great surf spot with slightly smaller waves and reasonably consistent surf. About 25 minutes further south along the Surf Highway, you’ll find Oakura Beach. This beach break offers both right- and left-handers and is suitable for all levels.

Soak up some culture at the Govett Brewster Art Gallery

With its eye-catching curved mirrored exterior, it’s hard to miss New Plymouth’s Govett-Brewster Art Gallery on Queen Street. The gallery is one of New Zealand's leading contemporary art museums and home to The Len Lye Centre. It’s also the first institution dedicated to a single artist; pioneering filmmaker and kinetic sculptor, Len Lye.

Stroll along New Plymouth’s Coastal Walkway

Spanning 13.2 km, the Coastal Walkway in New Plymouth is the perfect way to enjoy the scenery while getting some fresh sea air. The path runs between Port Taranaki and the eastern end side of Bell Block Beach. A must-see highlight along the way is the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge. Spanning an impressive 83 metres, this captivating structure resembles a crashing wave or the skeletal form of a majestic whale. From a specific vantage point, you'll be treated to the sight of the bridge gracefully arcing over the majestic Mt Taranaki, creating a truly awe-inspiring backdrop for a memorable photograph.

Enjoy a show at the theatre

If you're in the mood for some culture, add a visit to New Plymouth's Little Theatre to your travel itinerary. Established in 1933, it is one of the oldest dramatic societies in New Zealand. With a rich history and commitment to local talent, the Little Theatre offers a diverse range of productions that showcase the community's creativity and passion. From thought-provoking plays to entertaining performances, there's something for everyone on offer. Check out the theatre’s What’s On page to see which shows are coming up.

Immerse yourself in nature in Egmont National Park

Nestled in the heart of Taranaki, Egmont National Park is a haven for nature lovers. Whether you're seeking a leisurely stroll or a challenging hike, the park has a great selection of walks on offer. A popular option is the Wilkies Pools track which leads you through enchanting rainforests to serene pools in lush green surroundings. Whichever trail you choose, this awe-inspiring park offers the rare opportunity to reconnect with nature at its finest.

Enjoy a local craft beer at Shining Peak

Fancy sampling some of New Zealand’s great local craft beer? Head along to Shining Peak Brewing on Gill St, New Plymouth and sample their tasty beers straight from the tap. From hoppy IPAs to smooth stouts, the brewery offers a range of beers that cater to different tastes. Plan your visit for lunchtime and have a great meal while you’re there. Of course, we don’t want you to drive after having a few brews. Make sure you’ve got a sober driver, or stick with a sampling and take home a pack of your favourite brews to enjoy once you’re parked up.

Snap a picture at Dawson Falls

If you’re looking for somewhere to park up for the night, why not try the DOC-managed Dawson Falls freedom camping site. Just 30 minutes’ drive from Stratford, this picturesque spot is home to the 18-metre-high Dawson Falls waterfall. There are several loop tracks that lead to the falls from the Dawson Falls Visitor Centre. While you’re here, visit the Dawson Falls Power Station – home to one of the world’s oldest generators.

Marvel at the Three Sisters and the Elephant Rock

Discover the awe-inspiring beauty of the Three Sisters and the Elephant rock formations located at the Tongapōrutu River mouth. Technically, only two sisters remain, as one has been eroded by the sea. Joining them is the intriguing Elephant Rock. As the name suggests, this rock once resembled an elephant, although the trunk has now eroded. For the best vantage point, head along Pilot Road, (on the seaward side of State Highway 3) north of Tongapōrutu Bridge. At low tide, you can walk alongside the river and around the point to the rock formations. While you’re there, explore the nearby caves where you will find Māori petroglyphs carved into the cave rock walls.

Play a round of golf

Keen to hit the green? Taranaki is home to some exceptional golf courses that cater to both seasoned players and beginners.

  • For a memorable round, head to the renowned New Plymouth Golf Club, where well-maintained fairways and stunning views of Mount Taranaki await.
